FRIDAY
4pm Put the finishing touches to the drawings I am working on for one of our biggest clients Whitbread and head out of the offices which are located in a former Salvation Army Citadel in Ayr. After a quick pit-stop at home where I grab my surfing gear and catch up with my girlfriend Lorna, I hit the motorway and head over to Stube in Shawlands where I have a few Stellas with one of my surfing mates Dez.
11pm Stagger back to Dez's place and watch the Extreme Chanel on Sky TV, which shows all forms of extreme sports like surfing, wakeboarding, skateboarding and snowboarding. We also watch Sprout - a classic surf film which is great for putting us in the mood for braving the cold, Scottish waves.
Fall asleep on Dez's couch dreaming of surfing in Hawaii.
SATURDAY
8.30am After a quick check of the charts we decide to head to Coldingham Bay near North Berwick, a popular spot for surfers. Stick Jack Johnson on the CD player - can't seem to stop playing him at the moment - and drive for two hours until we arrive at the beach. When we get there the car park looks quite busy and I have a good feeling about the waves which look just about perfect. At this time of year the water is only about 5 or 6 degrees so the boots, gloves and hood all go on with my wetsuit.
2.30pm Decide to call it a day when I realise my face is completely numb. Long for the summer when I can get up to my girlfriend's mum's house in Tiree. It is right on the beach and is absolutely idyllic in the good weather. Tiree is very popular with windsurfers and I surf as much as I can when we are there several times a year.
3.30pm Safely ensconced in the St Vedas hotel, a lovely wee place with views of the bay where we have lunch and discuss the day's surfing. Caught a few great waves so it has been worth all the effort for those few moments of absolute exhilaration.
7pm Arrive home in Ayrshire and Lorna and I get changed and head off out to the Balgarth Hotel, which serves posh pub grub. Meet up with a few friends and down a few beers.
SUNDAY
11am Have a cooked breakfast and then take the dog for a walk at Maidens. Jack is a Heinz 57 (a mongrel) and lots of fun. Head to the Dowhill Farm Shop near Turnberry for lunch and then home.
3pm It is time for the dreaded Sunday supermarket shop - which I try to do as quickly as possible. Watch The Bourne Supremacy on DVD and then an old episode of Grand Designs. Despite working on designs for houses and commercial buildings all week, I love to watch what people do when they have unlimited funds. We always work to deliver on time and on budget so it is nice to see the rule book being thrown away now and again, although sometimes I have to watch from behind my hands when they make big mistakes.
9pm After dinner go upstairs and play my guitar. I taught myself how to play a few years ago after coming across a battered old acoustic guitar in an attic and I find it a great way to chill out on a Sunday night.
