PERMISSION GRANTED FOR EXTENSION TO HISTORIC COUNTRY HOUSE HOTEL

Planning permission has been granted to extend one of Scotland's best loved country house hotels.

A new garden pavilion is to be built at Piersland House Hotel in Troon, which was designed by renowned Scottish architect William Leiper in 1899 and was the home of the grandson of Johnnie Walker the founder of the famous Scotch whisky firm.

The £400,000 "tennis-style" pavilion, designed by architects Lawrence McPherson Associates will feature a sedum or living roof so that it blends in with the existing landscaping, and will provide seven luxury bedrooms.

Stuart McPherson, Partner with Lawrence McPherson Associates, said: "Piersland House is a Grade A building which has been carefully refurbished over the years and still retains all of its original features. We worked closely with the owners to ensure that the new part of the building would not only echo the original spirit of the building but blend in sympathetically with its garden surroundings.

"The new building will be located in what is now the Japanese sunken garden and will feature timber trellising and appropriate period features."

Work on the extension is expected to be complete by Spring next year.

Piersland House which is located opposite the Royal Troon Golf Course, world renowned location of the British Open Golf Championship, remained a family home until 1956 before becoming a country house hotel. The four star property currently has thirty bedrooms and is a popular venue for weddings and functions.
